Full Tour Itinerary

DAY 1: Monday – Orchid Beach (L,D)

Fraser Island, the traditional home of the Butchulla people, out from the southern coast of Queensland and sweeps north towards the Great Barrier Reef. It’s Queensland’s largest island and is considered to be the largest sand island in the world. The island has rainforests, eucalyptus woodlands, mangrove forests, swamps, sand dunes, fresh water lakes and coastal heaths. It is home to a small number of mammals, a diverse range of birds, reptiles and amphibians. It was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1992.

Today you’ll take a leisurely flight with Air Fraser from Caboolture Airport (Nth Brisbane) up the beautiful Southern Qld Coastline and out to Fraser Island where you will land on the Orchid Beach airstrip. Here, you will be met by our Adventure Australia Team and we will transfer you to your accommodation whilst at Orchid Beach. We’ll have some morning tea and our team will familiarise you with Fraser Island and the Tours’ Schedule. After the briefing we will head off taking in the sights of Marloo Bay and Waddy Point and then on to lunch on the beach under Indian Head. After lunch we will walk up Indian Head and we will also visit the exquisite Champagne Pools for a swim, before returning to Orchid Beach for the evening. We might even call in to the ‘trading post’ for a refreshment or two with the locals.

Our team will look after you in the evening with great food and a few yarns around the fire.

Accommodation: Orchid Beach

DAY 2: Tuesday – Orchid Beach (L,D)

Today after a hearty breakfast we head North on the ‘beach less travelled’ to the very tip of Fraser island…Sandy Cape.

Along the way we will visit Ocean Lake and then traverse the infamous Nykala Rocks (not for the faint hearted 4wd’er) but you’ll be in good hands with our excellent guides and capable vehicles. The drive up Manann Beach to the tip is spectacular with a real feeling of isolation. Get your cameras ready because the scenery on the Cape drive is unbelievable and depending on the tides not a bad spot to go fishing..

Upon reaching the Cape, we drive around the tip and then in a southerly direction down the beach where we will stop at the entrance to the Sandy Cape Lighthouse, have some lunch on the beach before we take the short hike up the dunes to the historical lighthouse.

This active heritage-listed lighthouse is the tallest in Qld. Built in 1870, it was the second major lighthouse to be built in Qld. It is one of the first lighthouses in Australia to be constructed using bolted prefabricated segments of cast iron, and one of only two such lighthouses in Qld, the other being Bustard Head Lighthouse, near Seventeen Seventy.

The lighthouse site offers spectacular sweeping views of Fraser Island, perhaps one of the best vantage point on the whole Island. After some sightseeing and photo opportunities, it’s a pleasant drive back to Orchid Beach.

Accommodation: Orchid Beach

DAY 3: Wednesday – Eurong (B,L,D)

This morning we head south along 75 Mile Beach. This magnificent stretch of sand is actually a gazetted highway with vehicles travelling in both directions contending with tides, creek crossings, traffic and the terrain, whilst keeping an eye out for dingos, beach fisherman and aeroplanes, as the beach doubles as an air strip for the island’s beach pilots.

First stop is the Pinnacles, stunning multi-coloured cliffs of red, yellow, brown and orange sands, The Pinnacles are the result of thousands of years of staining to the sand by Hematite in clay.

We then make our way to the SS Maheno Wreck. This ship was built in Scotland in 1905 as a luxury passenger ship for the trans-Tasman crossing. During WWI she served as a hospital ship in the English Channel. By 1935 the ship had been taken out of service and sold to a ship-breaker in Japan. On 25 June 1935, while being towed to Osaka to be broken up, she was caught in a strong cyclone 80klms off the coast of Qld. The towline parted, and on 9 July 1935 the Maheno became beached on the east coast of Fraser Island. During WWII the wreck served as target bombing practice for the RAAF and was used as an explosives demolition target by special forces from the Fraser Commando School.

Continuing down the coast, we’ll stop and stretch our legs and explore the boardwalk of Eli Creek. It is perfect for a swim in the crystal waters or simply relax and enjoy the atmosphere. We’ll have lunch at Eli Creek then continue south to our final stop for the day at Eurong Beach Resort. Here we’ll enjoy fabulous poolside accommodation, great meal choices, hot showers and friendly hospitality from the Eurong Staff.

Accommodation: Eurong Beach Resort.

DAY 4: Thursday – Kingfisher Bay (B,L,D)

After breakfast at the resort, we again travel south down the beach to Dilli Village, from here we head inland through the beautiful lakes district to our first stop at the majestic Lake Birrabeen. Lake Birrabeen is a picturesque example of a perched lake, sitting 80m above sea level. The sand that rings the lake is pure white and, as the lake gradually deepens, the water appears to turn an incredible shade of blue. It’s a great spot for a swim.

It’s then on to our lunch stop at Central Station. Central Station is located on Wanggoolba Creek. This creek was a sacred area for the Butchulla woman, where men were excluded and your guide will tell you a little of the traditional history of this area. Central Station was in later times to become the headquarters of Fraser Island’s forestry operations from 1920 until the late 1950s. An old logging village was also located here from days when tree felling was permitted on Fraser. There is an excellent historical display at the Central Station Site.

Then it’s on to Kingfisher Bay Resort via the Pile Valley & the historic Postans Timber Mill as we make our way across to the western coast of the island and our final stop for the day at Kingfisher Bay Resort.

Kingfisher Bay Resort is the only resort on the western side of the island, and is nestled amongst the tree-covered dunes on the edge of the Great Sandy Strait. It’s the perfect spot to relax after your trip and ideal for swimming, canoeing, sailing, fishing and boating or a sunset wine & cheese at the Jetty Cafe. Dinner tonight is in the restaurant and the menu selection is impressive.

Accommodation: Kingfisher Bay Resort

DAY 5: Friday – Brisbane (B,L.D)

After a leisurely breakfast, we leave the beautiful Kingfisher Resort and make our way to the ferry which will take us across to Hervey Bay. From here we make our way back to Brisbane with a leisurely drive down the coast to Brisbane.

Our guides will deliver you to either the Caboolture or Brisbane Airport; or to the City, depending on your requirements.
