Travelling north to Bedourie, our first stop is a cluster of ancient Waddi Trees and then past Old Roseberth Ruins and on to Cuttaburra Crossing.
We’ll see first hand the spectacular transformation of an arid landscape when water is added which gives life and sustenance to all manner of flora and fauna.
Our next stop is the Simpson Desert Oasis in Bedourie for morning tea and a look at some of the history of the area.
Our hosts, Doug & Tracy, are locals and they will tell us all about Bedourie and show some of the artifacts that have been found in and around Bedourie over the years. It’s a glimpse of the close association that the traditional owners, the Maiawali people have to this area.
We’ll then head through some of Bedourie’s flood plain country paralleling our first sandhill, 4WDing over a series of sand dunes to Pippagitta Waterhole and it’s flowing artesian bore.
Pippagitta Waterhole is a spectacular oasis in the middle of a harsh and often unforgiving landscape. The setting is pristine and the abundant birdlife is unbelievable.
Our guides will interpret the landscape and the cultural, historical and modern day significance of the site as you take an easy walk around the edge of the wetlands before returning to base for a refreshing swim before lunch.
We return to the to the historic Bedourie Hotel for afternoon refreshment with Jimmy Smith, the publican, who’s family were amongst some of the first pioneering pastoralists to settle in the area.
We will then return to Birdsville via Carcoory Ruins.
Return to Birdsville approx. 7.30pm
